An Taoisach launches the opening of the Grand Hotel's recent extension

Matthew Ryan MD of the Grand Hotel welcomes An Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern TD to the Grand Hotel.

An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, TD was greeted with a warm welcome from Matthew Ryan MD of the Grand Hotel, Malahide and a mix of industry and local business people when he officially launched the completion of the Hotel's recent extension and redevelopment programme.

An Taoiseach congratulated the Ryan family on their vision at investing 15m euro into one of the oldest and longest established hotels in Dublin and applauded their efforts to promote Malahide as a quality destination. The Hotel is the largest employer in Malahide and is a flagship in North County Dublin for large conferences and exhibitions. The extension includes a fabulous new lobby and reception area to welcome guests and 53 new bedrooms, bringing the total bedroom stock to 203. Coast Restaurant has been extended to take full advantage of the wonderful sea views and car-parking has been created for up to 400 vehicles. These changes compliment the already existing 14 dedicated conference and meeting rooms offering state of the art communication facilities and the magnificent leisure health and fitness club. "I have no doubt, once businesses experience the attractiveness of this property coupled with the picturesque seafront of Malahide village, the Grand Hotel will have even more success in attracting and retaining new business" said An Taoiseach. "The Malahide of today demands a modern hotel with all the ancillary facilities the Grand Hotel offers both to leisure and business guests. I am glad to say North County Dublin is now a major hub of industry for the capital. Dublin airport, just a few kilometres up the road, offers the gateway to the world and with the new terminal set to open shortly, business to the area is set to increase".

Ken Brown reflects on Irish Open golf

In a recent interview, Ken Brown, past winner of the Irish Open, remembered his stay at the Grand as part of his reminisces on the Tournament. We also remember Ken as a very charming guest, here's the extract from his interview.

"That was when Ken Brown, now a highly-respected television pundit with Setanta and the BBC, gained his first tournament win. In fact, Brown's first appearance on the European Tour was in the Irish Open at Woodbrook three years previously, and his swansong was at Mount Juliet in 1993. So the tournament has a special place in his heart.

I used to stay at the Grand Hotel in Malahide, where the set menu gave you the full works," he recalled. "I always enjoyed it there. Then there was Portmarnock which, in my view, remains among the top two or three links courses in the world. And the crowds were amazing. For us players, it was second only to the British Open on the European Tour, because of the quality of the course and the strength of the field."
